For those that have been following along with me on social media, you will know that I eat "plant-based". This term can be confusing because it has different meanings depending on who you ask! The definition I go by is: " a pattern of eating that consists largely of vegetables, grains, pulses, or other foods derived from plants, rather than animal products". This can be vegan but it can also be more flexible - including certain animal products (ie: dairy) or allowing oneself to have chicken, fish, dairy, etc on occasion as a way of removing restriction from the diet but also doing our part to reduce the environmental impact our food chain has (+ animal cruelty).
I have many clients come to me looking for recipes or ideas on how they can incorporate more plant-based meals, snacks or ingredients into their routines. To get you started, here are 10 ways to eat plant-based today:
Swap cows milk with unsweetened soy milk (very similar nutrient profiles)!
Swap mayo in your sandwiches with hummus!
Swap 1/2 of the butter in baking recipes with white bean puree!
Swap eggs in baking recipes with flax eggs!
Instead of using 1/2 cup greek yogurt in smoothies for protein, use 3 tbsp hemp hearts!
Swap milk-based cream cheese for tofu cream cheese. Here is a great recipe!
Swap scrambled eggs for scrambled tofu!
Swap ground meat with lentils in pasta sauces! Here is a recipe idea.
Swap egg or tuna salad in sandwiches with my chickpea salad!
Swap cubed chicken with cubed tofu or edamame beans into stirfries!
